Cindy Knebel Featured in the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Report
Cindy Knebel has dreamed of owning her own business since she was a child. She recalls spending time in her father’s small business and thinking she, too, had the entrepreneurial spirit.
Last May, Knebel witnessed her dream become reality with the opening of Revisit Resale, a quality consignment/resale store in North Liberty. The Chamber marked the occasion with a grand opening celebration and Knebel has embraced her Chamber membership ever since.
Knebel maximizes her networking at Chamber events by leveraging the unique intricacies of her business to target the interests of those she meets. Rather than “sell” her store, she engages people with details on what makes Revisit unique.
“I am excited about my business and it rubs off on people,” she said. “Every Chamber event I’ve been to, I’ve come away with a new customer.” Knebel says gaining just one customer makes attending Chamber events worthwhile.
Knebel says she identified a niche in consignment which resulted from the increasing trend to downsize belongings at home and at the once. The economy has also worked in her favor as people demand increased value with limited investment. Revisit reduces expenses for customers who choose not to purchase new items and promotes recycling.
The store features only gently used merchandise in good condition. Her store proved so successful after less than a year, last month she expanded from 1,000 to 2,500 square feet. Knebel, who has a background in interior design, is particularly mindful of the layout of the space. She uses small vignettes to display merchandise in an inviting atmosphere that replicates home.
Before expanding her business, Knebel also took into account Iowa’s aging population and transient student community. The ability to sell furniture and accessories they no longer need is appealing to both.
Knebel says the Chamber creates an atmosphere conducive to expanding one’s knowledge base. After attending a Chamber marketing seminar, Knebel established a connection with a fellow member skilled in social media and e-mail promotion. She plans to enhance these areas of Revisit in the coming year.
“The amount of quality opportunities the Chamber provides to learn and grow as a person and business are exceptional,” she said. “It is a great organization to use when starting a business. I highly recommend it!”
